Since my site auto-updated to 4.1.1, updating plugins or attempting to reinstall wordpress 4.1.1 from the update page no longer works. I get a “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” message that disappears after a period of time (without updating anything) or after I delete the .maintenance file from the site’s root based on the following post in this forum (https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/30-stuck-in-maintenance-mode-after-failed-plugin-upgrade?replies=32).

So I can get the site back up and running when I delete the .maintenance file, but I can’t update anything, at least automatically. Is this an known issue and if so, are there any fixes / workarounds (besides manually updating everything) that anyone can share with me?

    Thanks in advance!

    I’ll bump this, too.

Edit: I’ve found if I delete the .maintenance file and refresh the updates page (uncertain of negative effects), it’ll show it finished the update of one plugin/theme and move on to the next. Rinse and repeat for each item to be updated.

You’re doing better than I am, because my updates are pretty much dead in the water at this point, unless I do a manual update.

I have this same problem. Ever since 4.1.1 every plugin update hangs during update. Eventually page crashes. Refresh goes to maintenance mode on dashboard (site to). I can delete the .maintenance file and refresh and it has updated that one plugin and moved on. But with 8 pending updates at the moment I’m dreading this process. There has to be a fix and I’m just waiting for the one time that deleting the .maintenance file and refreshing doesn’t bring the site back up.

My problem has been fixed but I have no idea how. A week or so ago I logged in to the dashboard and again attempted to reinstall 4.1.1 and it worked. I assume that it was something with my host, but I honestly have no idea.

I have another website I manage (although infrequently) that I discovered this morning was suffering the same update problem. On the sites WP dashboard > updates page I reinstalled 4.1.1 by simply clicking the reinstall button. That did seem to fix the issue for this site as well.

I think the original install of 4.1.1 was corrupt and the reinstall appears to have corrected things. Good luck!
