I have had this problem for months and have tried different solutions but without success. My post permalink setting is set to postname in WordPress settings and has been saved. In a Bing or Yahoo search results of my post the url address with postname permalink shows up perfect. But in a Google search results my post are not showing up, just the url with my website name/category and that is all if it show up at all.
I have tried 2 different WP Themes, I have made sure my Plugins are compatible and up to date. I have changes some of my Plugins. I only have 15 plugins. I think the problem lies within a conflict between theme and plugin or in the htaccess but has anybody else every had this problem?
Why would the post permalink problem not showing up in the url only occur with a Google search and not Bing or Yahoo? This problem started suddenly last Sept. after I updated WordPress. Nothing I have tried has helped. I miss my traffic from Google searches and need help please.

  • Are you using Google Webmaster Tools at all. If you are, log in and see what error Google is complaining about (if there is any). Isolation with Google could be that it is using a sitemap of sorts and Bing and Yahoo are simply crawling.
What plugins are you using? 15 plugins is a tad bit and presents a greater chance of them clashing like you suggested.

This is how they show up in search engines:
    Bing (perfect on page 4)
Raleigh Antiques Extravaganza 2014 at NC State …
    https://www.travelnc.org/raleigh-antiques-extravaganza-2014-nc-state…

Google (no postname and on page 22)
NC Happenings – North Carolina Travel Guide and Events
    https://www.travelnc.org/nchappenings/

Could be Google XML Sitemap and WordPress SEO butting heads. Do you have a link to your site and a few examples of what you are referring to about the search results being screwy with Google results only?

Yea thats a bit odd.. I do not see anything wrong with your sitemaps although the freshness rate is a bit high for a single post but it should not cause issues you are having.

I thought it might be a conflict between Google XML Sitemap and WordPress SEO but changing to another sitemap plugin gives me errors with the sitemap in WebMaster tools and I lose all traffic. I do not have any of the WordPress SEO setting for sitemap checked nor in the WordPress SEO permalink settings. If I get rid of WordPress SEO plugin I lose all my SEO.

I am not seeing any issues when doing a custom search for your site. I am not convienced that the issue if with your site yet.

Do you see the issue when you do a custom search on Google?

None of my latest post from the last few months are showing up in the custom search. Just older post from before when this problem started. It is like Google can’t find my latest post using the website name/post name.
I find my most recent post included on older posts that do show up in a google search but that is because of the widgets on the homepage and the search grabs the keywords from the lastest post widget.

If I were to change from Bluehost to Hostgator would that possibly correct the problem? If it was due to a messed up file that is on the server and not in WordPress itself?

I highly doubt it is your host but it would not hurt to can ask them to take a look.

I think I have fixed my problem. I went to my server and was looking around at the files. There were some old files left over from a sitemap plugin I no longer use. I deleted these files and now my post are showing back up in a google search with the url address correct using the postname. The old file sitemap.xml.gz was the problem on the server side. Just wanted to let you know in case someone else ever has this same problem. Now I hope I start seeing google traffic again.

I am having the same issues. However, I am not sure the thread creator’s resolution was a universal one. I can’t locate any old site map files on my server.

I am also seeing an issue with the default query strings showing up when shared on my Twitter feed, instead of my custom ones.

    Please advise https://www.inceptionradionetwork.com
    Twitter: i_r_n

You’ll notice Twitter shows the ?p=xxxxxxxxxn query string, but once you click on the link, it shows the correct custom post name on my website. So somehow, Google is only pulling the default permalinks and not my custom postname.

BigFeat, I thought I had fixed this problem and there may have been some improvement but I still do have this problem where my post are not showing up in a Google search with the postname in the url. I can sometimes find my post but it is listed with just the website name/category name and not the post name in the url. Curious if you are using some of the same Plugins from my list I provided? It may be a plugin conflict but then why does it just happen in Google and not Bing. I just have run out of ideas on what to do to fix this problem. I don’t want to mess with my Bing traffic for the sake of Google. I wish someone could help us and figure out why the permalink postname does not show up in a Google search.

So did deleting the old .xml only allow your post to show temporarily? I am running Google XML Generator, Google Analytics by Yoast, and Metapack SEO. They should not be in conflict with one another. I also noticed that some post going back 2 years ago show up on Google search, but not anything in the past year, even on Bing. So something must have caused this interruption in my case.

What I am curious about is whether all my old post will hit the search engines if this issue ever gets fixed. I have well over 2,000 post and they all still bear some relevance. I would assume the bots would still hit the older post and publish them.

After I deleted the old sitemap files on the server side some of my latest post did show up in a google search, but there was no reason why some showed up and some still do not show up. My problem started in early Sept. after a WordPress update and I have tried so many different things to fix it and nothing has really helped much. My google traffic has really suffered since last fall. My older post prior to Sept. show up fine just like they should but any post after Sept. do not show up with the postname except for a few. Why some show up as website/postname and others are listed as website/category without the postname I have no idea. When I do a site:website test in google my website pages and even my more recent post show up correct, but not in a google search. I am starting to think it is not on my end but in google for some unknown reason. There is a new google algorithem coming this month and I think a WordPress update coming this month. Maybe the problem go away after that!
