• I have an older customized wordpress theme (non-responsive), and the content in my posts and excerpts are all customized html that looks great on tablets and desktops and converts well even on smartphones (the content contains fixed tables, and wide graphics). However, with the upcoming Google algorithm change, I must do something to make the site more smartphone friendly. So I need a plugin with the following options:

[1] Plugin that will send traffic to its own mobile theme when it detects smartphones (tablets and desktops will still use the older theme), so smartphones only. I want all tablets to go to desktop site.

[2] Allow me to custom edit the content in posts, including custom excerpts in those posts for mobile only. So, I don’t want to affect Desktop content, but only modify the way mobile looks. This way I can remove tables and wide images that will not render well in mobile, and replace with content that will render well.

Do any plugins exist that will do this? And allow editing of mobile content.

I do not want to go with a responsive theme, since it may harm my conversion with the current setup and involve an enormous amount of work.

Been searching and still have not found a plugin like this. Whoever develops this type of plugin will make a fortune.

Basically it gives you the advantages of a separate mobile site without having a separate site and URL. But will let you edit the content in the posts and excerpts so they pass the google mobile friendly test on a page by page basis.

I finally found a plugin that will allow you to edit both a desktop and mobile version, all without having a separate mobile url (m.mobile).

Its called Mobile Smart PRO: https://codecanyon.net/item/mobile-smart-pro/3671362

I have tested it out for a couple of days, and it looks like it works exactly as I wanted, a separate mobile content area, and it switches to a mobile theme if it detects a smartphone.

My only problem now is figuring which mobile theme to use, and how to change the settings in the mobile theme without activating it, as it could damage my old desktop theme that is heavily customized.

which mobile theme to use, and how to change the settings in the mobile theme without activating it,

Pretty much all themes (at least the ones from this site) are not specifically for mobile – most work on all size devices. That plugins developers will likely be able to give you better advice about how it works with themes.
