How Does Impression Count Work?

I have a brand new site that has only had a total of 295 pageviews since it was set up according to Google Analytics.
I installed AdRotate a few days after setting up the site. I just checked the number of impressions that the ad groups have received, and they are at about 3500 impressions each.
The groups do not have any rotating ads – just one ad so far per ad group.
It doesn’t seem like it’s possible to have so many impressions with so few pageviews, or maybe I’m not understanding what is being counted as an impression.
