  • Have you tried deactivating your plugins?

I deactivated all plugins and could again edit links in the post editor. I then enabled each plugin one by one till full set was enabled. I could still edit links. I saw a message that Jetpack was now disconnected from WordPress.com (for my stats) so I connected Jetpack to WordPress.com. That stopped the hyperlink editor from working. I then deactivated Jetpack however I again cannot edit links. In the process I have lost my stats at WordPress.com and also my social sharing buttons but appreciate that’s probably not a Twenty Twelve problem.

I did notice that the link editor failed after I upgrated WordPress but before I upgraded the theme. So now I am at a loss.

Okay, so the JetPack issues are fixable :)!

But for now, let’s go back to deactivating all your plugins and see if that fixes the problem.

And both the theme and WP are updated?

Yup. Just to confirm, I’m experiencing the same thing the OP does. After the update, no links can be added. I had a developer quickly scan through it and it’s an obvious WordPress bug.

Wow. Still can’t do anything. Reversing back to the previous version for the time being.

Do developers not test their updates anymore? How lazy is WordPress these days?

@tfolder – it would be great to have some help tracking down this issue, so could you start a new thread and provide details about your site – hosting, plugins, etc.

Do developers not test their updates anymore? How lazy is WordPress these days?

Pre-release Beta and Release Candidate builds have been available to the public for testing, and tested by many who are eager to help out their favorite free volunteer-developed blogging platform, since March 12. Here’s the first public announcement: https://www.ads-software.com/news/2015/03/wordpress-4-2-beta-1/

I had a developer quickly scan through it and it’s an obvious WordPress bug.

Would that developer please share what he found?

Same problem here one on of my sites. It’s just the WP update.

Except, it’s not on any of my sites, so let’s stop with the full-stop WP blaming and troubleshoot to find the problem. ??

First, try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

If neither of those make any difference, try adding define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to your wp-config.php file just below the define('DB_HOST' line.

To do so, access your server via FTP or SFTP and edit the file with a plain text editor.

Same problem reported here for multiple sites. disabled all plugins, no joy. Looks like a problem with 4.2 – using suffusion theme. The “search for existing content” function is also inop. on the insert/edit pop up.

    4.2 – using suffusion theme.

In that case, you should not be posting in a Twenty Twelve theme forum. Please start your own thread here:

WPyogi and James Huff, thank you. It is the Rel Nofollow Checkbox plugin that breaks the link editor in the post editor. I have deactivated that plugin and can now edit links.

I missed this first time after deactivating/reactivating as i didn’t know I had to refresh (in the post editor) the page I was testing the link editor.

You’re welcome, and thanks for letting us know what it was!

If you still want to use that plugin, I recommend asking about the issue over at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/rel-nofollow-checkbox

I verified that it is indeed the “ultimate no follow” plugin by bitacre that is causing this issue. Since this is the first result in google, this is where I posted. Theme choice notwithstanding and non sequitur.

Right, thanks for letting us know :)!

For anyone tuning in for the plugin issue, Rel Nofollow Checkbox 1.1.0 restores compatibility with WordPress 4.2: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/breaks-the-link-modal-box-in-wordpress-42
