Comment ID sequence skips

  • I’ve noticed something strange in my WP database that I’m not sure can be resolved.

    From time to time, I’ve had DB problems and have had to “fix” the MySQL database. Later, I’ve noticed that the sequence number for comments jumps. For example, commentID 100503 jumped to 4295012559 and then they are sequential from that point on.

    This has happened a couple of times and now my comment sequence is at 8589983575. I’m concerned about rolling around back to 0 and starting over, which would cause considerable headaches.

    Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix that can be run to resequence the comments and reset the “NEXT” value in the comments table?
