I’ve been using Aksimet successfully for two years, and just this weekend reinstalled and imported my site (I was taking it out of a multisite to make it standalone).

I am now unable to enter my API key into the new site (same domain, same server, same hosting, same IP) with error. Every time, it tells me:

The key you entered is invalid. Please double-check it.

That key is copied and pasted direct from my keypass, from my Akismet account that lists the as active (and was working fine until last week on the old multisite).

What could be the problem, and how would I go about fixing it?

I’ve double checked there are no spaces, and all 12 characters of the key are correct. There are no errors logged in the http logs and no additional clues in the access logs.

Is the key somehow hashed with the website’s secret hashes, meaning the key needs to be regenerated for a fresh WP install? Or some other problem? This is the same server, so nothing has changed wrt firewalls, PHP modules installed or enabled etc.

I got this error message this morning as well. I went to the Akismet site to double-check my key and it said no key exists for my account.

I think my key may have been deactivated because I went over my monthly limit? One of my blogs had 100,000+ spam positives last month! Yikes.

Ah, yes, I had 100k spam messages this month. No other month has exceed 10k. I have no idea who is spamming the world this month.

My account and key is still active, so I don’t think that is the problem with my site.

I tried again today, and it finally worked. I wonder if there is some kind of “cooling off” period between installs, during which the key can’t be used?

Now I have 1570 spam messages (in the last week!) to clean out…

    Hi Jason,

Glad to hear that Akismet is working again for you. There’s no sort of purgatory for keys between installs, so without knowing your API key and site URL it’s hard to say what the issue would be. If it happens again, drop us a line directly here: https://akismet.com/contact

    Dalton,

We don’t deactivate keys just because they have an excessive amount of spam. If you’d like us to look into this, drop us a line as mentioned above.

Thanks Greg, I’ve raised a contact ticket with the details of this issue, out of curiosity. If there is no simple answer, then not to worry.
