Problem: Pressed the auto update button. site updated. I went to update the plugins, a 404 page was displayed.
Tried to get into the dashboard area. I get a 404 error message.

    Action taken:
After getting info from a user here to remove my sites .maintenance file via ftp, I decided to do so. After checking and also seeing if I had files hidden I came to find out my site has no .maintenance file.

I created a dummy .maintenance file as I saw some users did for a different problem. Uploaded it to my sites root folder. then cleared my browsers cache, reloaded page which shows dummy text I had on the dummy file. I deleted the file via FTP and reloaded the site. Log into the site which seems to load fine. only to find nothing changed. 404 pages still showing.

I checked back to see if I got any more info from here but unfortunately no replies. I go to my sites cpanel area, and notice that the wordpress install showing on there is 4.1.4 ‘Strange I thought’ cpanel suggests to upgrade to newest version, now, the site loads fine, but the dashboard area and plugins area show blank pages instead.

I think I have described everything correctly. Hope I can get some help with this as I cannot update my clients info and add new client users to my site. I need help. Thank you in advance.

To everyone who has helped thus far I do appreciate your efforts. Sincerely, Thank you. However, nothing is working thus far. It seems to be getting worse.

  • you need to manually update.

if it doesnt work then you should enable error log and see if there are any errors.

Thank you laliz for the links. I did the manual upgrade exactly as written but I didn’t get anywhere with that as well. The back end is still completely off limits. All I get now is white pages of death…
I took a back up before the steps but I am not sure what else I can do other than a complete fresh reinstall. which obviously I do not want to do.

Any more hints would be helpful.

P.S. I also did the advanced upgrade procedure, but same thing… scratching head.

    THanks.

This process works usually, did you deleted old wp-admin wp include folders? and all files except wp-content folder and wp-config.php file.

you can try a complete reinstall too, take backup of database/ Wp-config.php file/ Wp-content folder. you can migrate these after wordpress is up.

also did you tried disabling all plugins by renaming the plugins folder. this fixes such issues in most cases

I did delete the wp-admin and wp-include folders as instructed in the manual upgrade directions.

Thanks I actually moved the plugins folder to a separate new folder expecting that to work after the first time. I thought the plugins could have done the damage. But moved it back after it had no effect.

I will try it all one more time, but if all else fails I will assume it is not a fixable situation and do a complete fresh reinstall. I will give you a reply once done.

Thanks too by the way for your time and support. I do appreciate your help and suggestions.
