After an update of WordPress my UpdraftPlus Backup/Restore page remained blank. I expected this to be solved soon by another update, so I just waited.
Now we had the upgrade to 4.2.1. but still no result.
Uninstalled and re-installed UpdraftPlus resulted in error message, ‘directory already exist’. So I manually deleted all UpdraftPlus directories and re-installed UpdraftPlus. Yes, I again had my UpdraftPlus pages. However, attempts to make a back up first seemed to work again but with many zip file error messages. Retried without success. Now the situation has changed, UpdraftPlus reports that a backup is succesfull while nothing is being backed up and the log file is empty.
What is next step I should try??

    Hi,

Please can you provide a link to your log file for the problematic backup? (You can download it from the “Existing Backups” tab of your UpdraftPlus settings page).

It’ll be too long to paste into the forum here, but you can download it to your computer, and share it with Dropbox, or paste it in pastebin.com, or any similar service, and post the link here.

After an update of WordPress my UpdraftPlus Backup/Restore page remained blank.

Blank pages in the admin area usually mean that your site is running very close to its PHP memory limit, and sometimes tipping over. To raise your memory limit, see: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/deal-fatal-error-allowed-memory-size-errors/ (I’d raise it, whether you see the text error or not – you won’t usually see the text itself unless you turn debugging on and your debugging messages are set to go to the browser).

    Best wishes,
    David

Re-reading, I see that your log file is empty. Most likely, your wp-content/updraft directory is not writable. If you go to the “Settings” tab in UpdraftPlus, and go down the bottom to the ‘expert’ section, then does it show any message about this?

    David,
    Thanks for your response!
I parsed the expert section but I have not found any message suggesting that the updraft directory is not writable.

But it seems your suggestion is very close to the problem, because now I also experienced problems with uploading a document to the server. Several times it seemed successful but then this document on the server appeared to be corrupted! Same when trying this with FTP (FileZilla). Later today I managed once to upload a document successfully.

However backing up with UpdraftPlus, (much larger files involved), still results in a bunch of zip-errors, sometimes the process stocks, sometimes it ends saying Backup Successfully but with errors which is not confidence inspiring.

So the problem seems to be a lack of proper communication with the server!

Do you want me to send you the UpdraftPlus log file? If yes, how can I mail you this?
    Regards,

The communication seem to be restored again and UpdraftPlus works again, backup is made within three minutes. It is uploaded to Googledrive in five steps, so I assume it is about 5 x 500 MB = 2.5GB.

The provider denies that there has been any problem.

The only thing that remains that UpdraftPlus produces some (five) zip errors: “The attempt to close the zip file returned an error (Unknown: ZipArchive does not return error messages)”, this occured also before the problems of last weekend.

    Hi,

It’d be handy to see the log file – though, my guess would be that your web hosting account disk space gets full during the backup – see here for some guidance on how much you may need to have during a backup: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/how-much-free-disk-space-do-i-need-to-create-a-backup/

I have a similar problem except Updraft Plus doesn’t show up as a plugin in my plugins directory. When I tried to insall it, it said it was already installed. But it doesn’t show anywhere as active, inactive, or as a dropin.

    It says it’s installed here:
    /home/strate28/strategic-thinkingnow.com/wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/

Last backup to my dropbox was October 2014! I hadn’t realized there was a problem until I got the message to install WP 4.2.2 and thought I’d check the plugins, too.

    Hi jeridenn,

Your symptoms indicate that you have UpdraftPlus half-installed… some if it’s there, but not all. To re-install, use FTP to remove that directory entirely from your site, and then install again.

Last backup to my dropbox was October 2014

In the UD settings tab, there’s an option to send yourself an email to report when a backup runs – this is a handy way to know that your backups are going ahead.

    Best wishes,
    David

I can’t get updraft plus to work on any of my sites, I keep getting this error message when I test the FTP settings

FTP settings test result: Failure: we did not successfully log in with those credentials.

    Messages:
    * PHP event: code E_WARNING: ftp_login(): Login authentication failed (line 29, wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/includes/ftp.class.php)

I solved this by chatting with my web host support team, inmotionosting.com. They saved the folder under a different name and moved it from the main home/ site. Then I re-installed the plugin. It worked.

I also bought the $10 add-in to back up my site to a sub folder in Dropbox. Had to delete the recently installed plugin and upload a downloaded zip file. But once I did that, and updated the settings, everything started working as it should.

Thank you, David, for replying to my prior post about the issue I was having. What’s strange is that everything was working fine after I bought the Dropbox addon last June 2014 and uploaded the plugin. So I’m not sure why it stopped working in October.

At any rate, I’ve re-purchased the plugin and re-uploaded the plugin as I indicated above, and all is working fine now.

    Thanks!
