I’ve discovered something over on the Facebook side that might shed some light on this but is not a solution.

Apparently when a third party accesses Facebook, as in this case, FB gives the app a choice as to which photo picking method to use. One of those methods is “Let FB pick.” Others are “First photo”, “Specify a photo”, etc.

This is just a guess on my part that the SMF plugin did not specify which photo and FB is happily choosing any ol’ thing.

@redbeautytextiles: You should link to a page showing the issue

That being said, the plugin always tries to tell facebook to use either the featured image (if set) or if not the first image in the post. Facebook can however disregard this parameter we send in and sometimes it does (either because your site uses OpenGraph tags that specify different things, or because Facebook already cached your page info).

Is there any workaround in regards to this issue? I don’t use featured images and I notice that it matters what device I am using where as to what image is picked from post or page.

Is there a way to edit SMF so that images just are not taken from the blog site?

What do you mean by “not taken from the blog site”? The only thing you can do to get more refined control over which images are share on FB is to install an OpenGraph plugin that allows you to edit this info.
