• Hi Folks

Really hoping you can help me here as I am going mad!

I have recently upgrade https://www.perthshire-lettings.co.uk to the newest version of WordPress and since then I have been having massive issues with my password.

I have been having a read on Google and the support forums but nothing seems to work but for other user’s it does!

The Situation – Recently updated and I tried my correct username and password and it would not allow me to login, so I tried to change the password via the MD5 option and also the normal option but none seemed to work.

I then tried changing the username also, I can change the username however once again no passwords will work…well that is not correct…I can reset my password via the lost password it will allow me to change and it will work for 2/3 minutes however if I am to log out of the site and log back in the password will no longer work, I have also tried changing my password through PHP My Admin 10/20 times but still not working.

My site works normally and users can still access it however this password is driving me crazy…I have tried all the other stuff eg, disabling the plugins changing the themes etc however it still messes up.

Has anyone got any other ideas? I do not want to be in the position where I need to back up everything and start from scratch as I am afraid I would wipe the whole website and need to start from the beginning!

    Please help.

    Regards
    Callum

The password doesn’t magically change by itself.

When you say it stops working, does the login screen actually tell you the password is now incorrect? Or does it simply not log you in properly, giving you no feedback? Compare the result with putting in an actual wrong password.

If it just fails to log you in, then try another browser. One you don’t normally use. If that works, then back on your original browser, go into the settings, and clear the cookies for the browser, then try it again. You may have to try this multiple times.

    Hi Samuel

It simply does not log me in giving me no feedback what it will allow me to do is ask for a password reset then change this password, this password will work first time however if I am then to close the session and try to go back in it will not allow me in with that password which then results in me needing to change it again.

I have tried a few different browsers but this is not making any difference, any other thoughts?

PS – Thank you for getting back to me!

    Try a different computer entirely.

The problem is cookies, basically. Your cookies are sticking around and not resetting properly. It’s a browser-side issue, not a server side one. You need to clear your cookies and cache completely.

Thank you, I did get my customer to try and log in after the password reset however they did not manage to get in either, however this may be because it’s still not seeing the change on my side?

Okay then, I would fall back to the standard debugging procedures. Disable your plugins and switch to the default theme. See if the problem still exists then, and re-enable them one by one until the problem comes back. Then you know where the problem is.

There’s no real change to core to cause this to happen, so it must be some incompatibility between something on your system and WordPress.

I can’t even get in now as each time I reset the password I am getting an invalid key error?

I did also try the plugin deactivation etc earlier but this made no difference?

Does your site sit behind some sort of caching proxy, something like Cloudflare?

Did the issue with invalid key happen after you disabled all the plugins or prior, does it continue when you have plugins disabled.

Are you using a default theme?

Try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Tim, I maybe thought that earlier whilst I was @ work, however now I am at home and it’s not behind any proxy as far as I know!

The issue with the invValid Key only happened around 18:30 after numerous pw resets but yes after i had disabled and enabled all plugis!

no the theme that i current use is called ” Courage “

    thanks

    Radices,

Wouldn’t this clear my current site? I have put a lot of work into the site and don’t want to lose any work?

Read and follow the instructions carefully and you’ll be fine. Do not overwrite the /wp-content/ folder or the wp-config.php file.

I seem would it keep the same layout etc?
