• I’m thinking of switching to a different theme for my WordPress site. I’ve been using the current theme for a year now.

Can I disable the current theme and enable the new one without losing any data, blog posts or widgets that the current theme is using?

Is there a proper way of doing this so that data, etc., is not lost when switching templates?

  • You should be able to switch themes without losing anything. You should even be able to switch back to your original theme without losing anything if you find out that a different theme isn’t suitable for your purposes.

You might lose widgets that came with the theme, but that’s fairly rare. I think Twenty Fourteen came with a few of its own widgets, for example. But you should retain any widgets/plugins that you installed separately from the theme. The theme, though, might have different location names for its sidebars/widget areas, so you may need to drag those into whatever widget areas the theme defines. For example, if your current theme has a widget area called Sidebar, but your new theme has an area called Sidebar Right (because it also has another area called Sidebar Left), then you would need to drag your widgets into the new sidebar areas and reconfigure them.

You may also need to set the location of the theme’s menus to point to the menu that you’ve created (go to Appearance → Menus and click the Locations tab).
