Currently running 4.2.2 Multi-site, just turned over to MS 48 hours ago. Has anyone seen this error before ???

Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 2 in /home/www/worldwidewebsitestore.net/wp-includes/rewrite.php on line 363

Now; none of the types of permalinks on the site work, AND the only time the error does NOT appear is by using the “default” link structure (aka – ugly links)… Very strange… checked the code in question with a matching file from a “new / fresh” install – no difference… even tried replacing it with the one copied from the fresh install… no change. So the file didn’t get damaged. the only recent activity is an UNinstall of some unused plugins. Nothing new added recently. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards, SCMG.

  • Greetings:

Have you tried deactivate all plugins and switch to the default theme twentyFifteen? To see if the error is caused by a plugin or your theme? If the error goes away, activate plugins one at a time to find which one causes the problem.

Also, have you verified the .htaccess file is properly created and mod_rewrite is enabled? https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Multisite_Network_Administration#.htaccess_and_Mod_Rewrite

    Good Luck!

Thanks Martin… but .htaccess and mod_rewrite are fine – as noted – site worked perfectly for first 48 + hours – until we un-installed a couple of plugins that we didn’t want to use anymore… then BLAM… errors started.
That’s counter intuitive behavior – most times when INSTALLING plugins this happens due to conflicts / incompatibility in function code, etc.

    You are welcome,

    What plugins had you removed?

Have you tried re-installing and reactivating them? If the error is gone it would mean the plugin removal was not complete or clean enough, right?

Did the plugins activation write to the .htaccess file? And the deactivation not revert it?

    LOL…

Spot on Martin… after running a thorough check on all the files that were mentioned in the error cascade yesterday; we came to the same “logical” conclusion, and were able to clean the uninstall by using that process. Thanks for the “LOGIC” followup.

We thought that the day before – but we said – “NAH – that’s too easy”.

Sometimes it really is the easy thing right in front of your face !

Thanks again. We’ll happily mark this one resolved.
