• When looking at my WordPress stats, I see that most of the visitors land on the ‘homepage/index’. Clicking on that link however shows me that they are directed to this link: https://198.46.81.179/~trave251/ and receive anot error message. The homepage URL should be: https://www.travellousworld.com.

    I checked in the stats for the other links that were registered as views, and these work fine and are the URLs which they are supposed to be. The problem only occurs with the homepage/index. Since the largest amount of visitors end up here, I would like to fix this issue ASAP.

    I’m not sure how to change this however? I’m absolutely not a technical person, but I hope someone can help me with this.

  • It’s a two parter:

    1. Can you see where the visits are originating from?

    When I check the source (html) of your page, I still find one reference to https://198.46.81.179/~trave251/

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="https://198.46.81.179/~trave251/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Logo-doorzichtig.png" />

    This makes me think that your site may have been indexed, with the old ip url. If you can find which site is linking to this old url, you can try to request a change.

    2. You don’t want visitors to land on a 404 page. So you can redirect https://198.46.81.179/~trave251 to https://www.travellousworld.com

    You can use a plugin like https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/redirection/ or ask your host to set a rewrite rule to redirect the ip url to your homepage.

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your reply!

    I’m pretty new to all of this, and my technical abilities are pretty low I’ve to say.

    They did transfer my website from a .com WordPress account to a .org WordPress account (WPBeginner helped me with this). Could it be that the transfer isn’t 100% complete, and that’s why it still links to an old URL? And how can I request a change if this is the caste?

    I think I’ll try the redirect plugin you recommend. I absolutely don’t want people to end up on this 404 page.
