    This theme is exactly what I’ve been looking for, but I’m having fits getting the static front page to display like that shown in the espied demo. I feel like I’ve checked everything, but now I think I’m missing the forest for the trees.

    I’ve tried the static front page both with and without shortcode. The display changes obviously, but neither match the style of the demo. I’ve downloaded a new espied package, and started a new, clean wp installation.

    I’m using permalinks, and have emptied caches, and refreshed my browser for each new guess I’ve tried.

    the URL is https://www.dfellows.net

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi there – sorry you’ve had trouble setting up Espied!

    The two keys are:

    1) set your site to display a static page on the front page, under Settings > Reading
    2) on that page, select the Portfolio Page Template template from the Page Attributes box:
    https://cloudup.com/cw44kFby5Tk

    If you don’t see the Page Attributes box, click the “Screen Options” tab at the upper right and make sure it’s selected:

    The shortcode is not needed here.

    You’ll find a full guide in the “Front Page Template” section here:

    Hope this gets you on your way, let me know how it goes!

    Yes, I’ve been over everything in your suggestion several times. My link clearly shows my dilema (at least on Safari and Firefox). As a SWAG, I’m wondering if it’s an image sizing issue.

    I’ll re-do all of my images again before giving up on this theme.
    Thanks.

    What do you mean by that? I’m intrigued but not sure what you mean. ??

    Did you switch from another portfolio-enabled theme before moving to Espied? If so, you could try running the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to be sure the portfolio images are resized to Espied’s specifications.

    A few of the photos i’ve loaded were snapshots in the size range around 240 x 350px. I’m just wondering if perhaps that’s way too small.

    I have tried other themes, but have running the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin several times.

    That sounds like a likely culprit. The minimum sizes for the portfolio are here for the different ratios:

    add_image_size( 'portfolio-landscape', 480, 360, true );
    add_image_size( 'portfolio-portrait', 480, 640, true );
    add_image_size( 'portfolio-square', 480, 480, true );

    So if you’re going with the default square portfolio thumbnails, you need images that are at least 480px square.

    That’s worth a try. However, I just deleted all my projects, and started over. So far I’ve got just two projects each containing pics in the range of pics.
    Thanks for your continued help on this.

    ooops. “in the range of 1000px”

    OK, I can see that your images are being displayed too large right now, even though your front page is static and has the Portfolio Template applied.

    Have you modified any theme files or added any custom CSS anywhere? If so, try undoing those changes temporarily.

    If that doesn’t help, try temporarily deactivating all your plugins. If the projects looks right, reactivate them one by one to try to find the culprit.

    I can see in your HTML that your portfolio images are being correctly resized by the theme to the default landscape dimensions:

    <img class="attachment-portfolio-landscape wp-post-image" width="480" height="360" alt="img_6684-2" src="https://www.dfellows.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/img_6684-2-480x360.jpg">

    Something else must be overriding that, it’s a question of figuring out what.

    Thread Starter dfellows

    (@dfellows)

    no. I’m using unmodified code everywhere (both wp and espied theme). At one point, I did create an espied child theme, but have since reverted back to the original, and deleted all child theme files.

    I deactivated all plugins, including jetpack. Of course, the portfolio page failed, but everything else looked okay. Then activated ONLY Jetpack and verified the module (in setting > writing. Same symptoms as before (portfolio images displaying full-page. I verified that the static front page IS using the portfolio-page-template.

    What’s really weird is that I have another installation – different wp espied files in another directory – and that one works just fine.

    I had one of our developers look at this, and it appears that your install may be hacked, which is what may be causing the issues. We ran it through the Sucuri Malware scanner and came up with some positive results:

    https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/www.dfellows.net/

    We suggest trying to clean up the site to make sure the malware is fully removed. Hopefully that will solve the problem!

    You may also want to look into a security plugin like VaultPress to prevent this from happening in the future. Good luck!

    I was beginning to think something like that. Now for cleaning that stuff up.

    Thanks very much for all your help!
