Where to install WordPress

    i am planning to setup wordpress on my website but i am not sure where to install the contents..
    what i am asking is that which is the proper directory to install the contents
    is it better to do in root or to install it in some other directory.?
    and what is the main difference these two methods.?
    *i am new in this field so please help me out..and if its possible please do explain in simple words.
