membership expiration/keep data

Hi,

I have an event (basically a paid registration for a membership to a community group) that is held behind a member registration screen. Once the person registers as a member, they are directed to an event page where they can pay for membership to this community group.

The membership to this community group expires one year from the date of payment. Most of these members will register again the following year. Is there a way to “expire” their membership in a batch mode (until they pay again) and take them from published users into a holding mode while still keeping all of their data in the system?
