Themes/plugins that mimic Shutterfly's Share sites

I was curious if anyone had any input.
There seems to be plenty of WordPress themes or plugins to do just about anything anyone wants.
What we would like to do is replicate the functionality of Shutterfly’s Share Site.
These shared sites allow people to have shared calendars, post pictures, be a “listserv” (for us old folks) for the members and generally be a central gathering place for all participants.
I liked using it for my kids’ classes but have become a bit wary about sharing student information on a for-profit site like shutterfly.
If we could bring all that functionality in-house, into our own systems then build share sites for each class, it would give me the peace of mind that our children’s images and information is safe internally, without being inundated with ads to buy pictures and prints.

I’m a fan of WordPress and my own company site is built on WP with EventEspresso on top (to keep me from using EventBrite) for event management.
