• This has gotten discouraging. I bought a domain name (jemalyoung.com) and am using FileZilla FTP, installed WordPress and created a site. Then I made the mistake of changing the WordPress Address URL and Site Address URL from the Dashboard, under Settings. As you can imagine, the site crashed.

I used phpMyAdmin to drop the database and reinstalled WordPress. Then I found what I believed to be the solution: mapping the domain via wordpress.com (for $13 per year) and setting the DNS servers to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM and NS3.WORDPRESS.COM, as detailed here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/. It said it could take up to 72 hours to kick in.

Today I got a message from someone at wordpress.com saying the following:

During a recent check, we noticed that you purchased domain mapping for jemalyoung.com through WordPress.com on the 7-28-2015. This mapping was added to a self-hosted, Jetpack connected site, however, WordPress.com subscriptions are currently only available for sites hosted here.

I’ve gone ahead to remove the mapping subscription from your WordPress.com account and refunded your payment. Don’t worry, this won’t have any effect on your domain or website.

If you would like to use the domain with a site hosted by WordPress.com you will need to sign up for a new site using the following link:
    https://signup.wordpress.com/start/?step=step-home

But that’s not what I want. I want to use the domain I own on an existing WordPress site I’ve already created via installing WordPress. This site: https://jemalyoung.com/wordpress/

Now when I go to https://jemalyoung.com, it takes me to the Index of / link, and when I click index, it takes me to https://jemalyoung.com/wordpress/. This is very confusing. On the bright side, once this is sorted out I’ll feel very accomplished. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to make jemalyoung.com the way visitors get to jemalyoung.com/wordpress?

We really can’t help you here. As you know, your domain is pointing to the WordPress.COM DNS servers. Your site is currently hosted on WordPress.COM.

This place is www.ads-software.com, different animal. What you want to do is get your DNS entry for jemalyoung.com to point to your site. Until that happens it doesn’t matter what you do in advance on a self-hosted plan.

Please again contact WordPress.COM and have that DNS entry updated to where you want it to be. If they’ve already done that then you’ll have to wait for it to propagate and that could take a couple of days.

Thanks Jan. I’ll see what I can do and I appreciate your help.

Okay, I’ve disconnected the domain jemalyoung.com from from the WordPress.COM hosted site, reinstalled WordPress and just created a new site (title is Jemal Young, URL is https://jemalyoung.com/wordpress) that should be associated with the right animal, www.ads-software.com. What I want to do now is make https://jemalyoung.com the URL that people use to get to the site and that appears in the navigation field when people visit the site. Last time I tried to do this, I crashed my site. Does anyone know how I can do it correctly?

If it’s helpful to know, my DNS is with Namecheap and I’m using FileZilla FTP.

    Thanks
