Sidebars–how to add widgets

HI I installed WordPress to my server at 1and1.com.
I uploaded the theme: Blue Zinfandel 1.0 by Brian Gardner.

When I tried to change the sidebar, I got this message,
“You are seeing this message because the theme you are currently using isn’t widget-aware, meaning that it has no sidebars that you are able to change. For information on making your theme widget-aware, please follow these instructions.”

I clicked on the link but from how it read, it sounds like I need to be the theme creator to change the sidebars. Can anyone please help me? How can I change the sidebars if I am using this theme? tx much!
