• I run an animal welfare site, initially set up to hold online supplementary information to the Irish Trap Neuter Return Manual – How To Help Feral Cats.

I need to upgrade my theme (because the current one is ancient, own design through Artiseer). This gives me the opportunity to give a more user friendly presentation/step through of the online manual.

I want to be able to present individual pages of the manual with

    • header
    • intro text
    • a 3 column layout which illustrates subpages, each with an icon, text and Learn More link – there could be three to five subpages, so possibly two rows
    • more text full width relevant to the page

I can’t see a way to upload a pic here, so have put an illustration of what I mean on FB here. The image should clarify exactly what I mean.

I had a look at themes with Grid Page Templates (eg. Edin) – but there’s no flexibility on the display or position of the subpages – they all list them after the text of the parent page, like a shortened blog. Not what I want.

Many themes have what I want on their front page (eg. Pinnacle). But I can’t figure out how to set up individual pages with the format I want.

Is there a theme that would give me the functionality I’m looking for? Or is it going to be something I’ll have to code. If so, how?

I worked as an analyst programmer for seven years, including two years UID, about 25 years ago, and have learned wordpress on a need to know basis. A slightly skilled amateur in other words.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Muriel!

There are many ways you could achieve this depending on your skill level and the amount of flexibility you need. Here’s a couple of options for you:

    1) The simplest way would probably be to design this layout in your page editor using a few shortcodes for layout and a full-width template (i.e. no-sidebar).

    or

    2) You could create a ‘custom post type’ so you have additional fields in your post editor for the intro text, sub-page section and more text section. This would be especially useful if you need to change/add new content to the manual regularly.

I hope you find that helpful…let’s us know how it goes ??

    Cheers,

    Luke
