I’m trying to name a new page Podcast, with the url https://deswalsh.com/podcast

In the edit mode, <podcast> switches immediately to <podcast-2>. But when I type in the url with just <podcast> as in https://deswalsh.com/podcast/ the right page comes up, but with the /podcast-2/ url displayed.

I have studied several threads here on deleting old slugs, have been laboriously through tables in PHPMyAdmin without finding a trace of the slug, have installed and run two plugins now to delete old slugs, have deleted the category <podcast> and tag <podcast>. All to no avail.

In a way, it is not a big problem, as the correct page shows when I type in the url with just the /podcast/ ending. And also, for the record, when I use the /podcast-2/ version. But I’m curious and would anyway like a tidier setup.

    Possible clue to an explanation

I had set up a sub-directory https://deswalsh.com/podcast and installed a separate copy of WordPress there (long story as to why I did that but it was not necessary and in fact dumb). Then I decided not to have a separate installation and deleted that installation. The url for that installation was https://deswalsh.com/podcast/. I believe I have fully deleted that installation and the related database, but I may be missing something here extra that I could do.

  • Does that /podcast/ folder still exist? If so, try removing or renaming it. It might be detecting the existence of that folder and so doesn’t allow a slug with that name to be created.

    Just guessing.

I don’t think so Mark, but I’ll check again. Thanks for the suggestion.

MarkRH, I’ve looked high and low but can find no trace of that old folder. But thanks for the suggestion.

I went back and did another search of the database at phpMyAdmin, specifically in wp_postmeta. I went through most of the 6,800 or so entries and then struck paydirt. The relevant item was one of several relating to the Yoast SEO plugin. I deactivated and then deleted that plugin, and was immediately able to edit the url for the Podcast page, without seeing /podcast/ suddenly (or later) become /podcast-2/).

Not sure where that leaves me vis-a-vis Yoast’s SEO plugin but I am not doing anything rash.

Hmmm.. I’ve never used Yoast’s plugin. I wonder if it has it’s own custom post slug thing? Interesting. Might ask on their support: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wordpress-seo

Seems it does have some stuff related to slugs judging by some of the threads.
