I’m currently trying to upload the zip of my first WordPress theme to be reviewed in the theme repository, and I keep getting the following error.

You need to upload a version of Clean Blog higher than 2.1.0. Increase the theme version number in style.css, then upload your zip file again.

I have no idea why it’s telling me this, especially since it’s a new theme so it’s version is 1.0.0

The only thing I can think is that there was once a theme with the same name or folder name, so it’s causing an error when uploading.

I checked the URL of what the theme would end up as, but it’s not showing any active theme, so I’m stumped.

    Any ideas?

  • Not that it’s a permanent solution, but what happens if you do as it suggests and change the theme’s version to 2.1.1?

    I haven’t tried yet, because I wasn’t sure if it’d cause a problem since it’s a theme and should be 1.0.0

Sanity check: Can you successfully upload a zip of some other theme???

Beyond the above, have you ruled out the idea that your issue has to do with a 3rd party plugin? That is, have you temporarily deactivated ALL your plugins at the same time and tested to see if you can still reproduce your issue? Moreover, what theme is currently active? If it’s not the default Twenty Fifteen theme I would temporarily switch back to it when all your plugins are deactivated and test again to see if you can reproduce your issue.

Oh, and of course, you should ask this question on your theme’s support page if you’ve narrowed down the issue to the bug occurs ONLY with your Clean Blog theme, on a build of WordPress that has no active plugins, and the Twenty Fifteen theme running.

    Thanks for the reply.

Actually, this is for a theme I created and am trying to submit to be reviewed for the theme repository, not a theme in use on my blog.

Oh, LOL, I see — “Theme submission”. Silly me! Hmm, is this the correct forum for your question?

I’m not sure, but the troubleshooting in the title sounded close enough for me. If a mod wants to move it, I’m completely fine with that.

    Update:

I changed the version number just to see what would happen, and it now gives me this error notice

There is already a theme called clean-blog by a different author. Please change the name of your theme in style.css and upload it again.

Like I mentioned in the original post, that theme doesn’t appear to be active. Anybody know a way around this?

I’d hate to have to go change all of the mentions of ‘clean blog’ throughout the theme and release documentation.

Have you reviewed the various guidelines here:

I looked for a better support forum for you but cannot find anything. One would think there would be a specific forum for this topic being that it goes outside actual WordPress support. It’s almost like you need to get ahold of an admin for the theme submission site that can look and see if another theme by the same truly exists.

It looks like a user used to have a theme uploaded with the same name, but it’s no longer live.

I would love if a theme review member could help me keep the name of my theme so I don’t have to go in and change cleanblog dozens of times ??

Oh yes, when I went to https://themes.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/22173, I see where they were getting the 2.1.0 version number. Bummer, depending upon their submission rules you may have to change your theme’s name. BUT, I would get ahold of a support person first before doing anything so drastic!

I’m reaching out now. It looks like the previous theme author has removed everything from WordPress. My guess is he got frustrated with their review process, so he’s just publishing it on Github now.

Hopefully that means I can get keep the ‘clean blog’ name.

Thanks for your help Randy, I appreciate it!

Cool plan and you’re very welcome!!!

P.S., Once you feel your issue posted here has been resolved, please be sure to mark this thread “resolved” using the dropdown in the sidebar. It saves other volunteers from looking into questions that have already been answered. ??

    The theme already exists: https://themes.svn.www.ads-software.com/clean-blog/

Essentially, no, you can’t get that theme name now. Theme names are done on a first-come-first-serve basis. It’s possible to switch a theme to another account, but I think it’s a nightmare to change this behind the scenes. Plus, this is an entirely different theme anyway. We wouldn’t want users updating their Clean Blog themes only to find out their site has completely changed.

The best course of action is to find a better name. “Clean Blog” isn’t a great name anyway. You can be more creative than that!

Thanks Justin. I chose the name originally since it was based off a Bootstrap template of the same name.

I’ll brainstorm some name ideas and get it switched up.

Thanks for such a fast response, I appreciate it.

‘Cleaner Blog’ should work, and an editor like NotePad++ can do hunt-and-replace to change all instances at once and then you will only need to fix the actual Theme Title (‘cleaner-blog’ to ‘Cleaner Blog’) in style.css and readme.txt.
