    I need help please.
I have certain products that need to be in several categories. In order to keep the site navigation running smoothly, I have been creating duplicate product pages in order to assign these products tor additional categories. The problem is when some searches for a particular product, all the duplicate product pages are returned in the search results. What should I be doing to prevent this.

    Thanks for any help.

  • You do not need multiple products. You can assign products to multiple categories using the product categories checkboxes, when editing a product.

Perhaps the issue is that, when a product is in multiple categories, the breadcrumb is built using the first category it finds in the product’s categories list, which is not necessarily the category you just came from. May confuse some users. I don’t know a way round it. I’m pretty sure duplicating products is not the way to go, its only a matter of time until they get out of sync.

    Thanks for the replies here.
this is what I am doing please let me know if you think this is a good work around.

    Example:
I create main product page for say a cat carrier and assign it to Shop for Cats ( main category) and sub category cat carriers.
Then I create a duplicate product page for this product, and assign it to the other categories it needs to be in, input the original url in the canonical link to prevent duplicate content in search engines and change the visibility for this product page to “catalog” so it doesn’t show up twice for searches in the search box..

    does that seem ok? thanks!

Its not how I would do it. I’ll go with mpmb23 and suggest one page per product only. Duplicate content leads confusion and problems when one gets altered and the other not.
