    Multi site WordPress 4.2.
My sites do not allow comments, these are pages and not posts.I noticed one of the sites have comments in the Activity area of the dashboard.
    It says:

    Pingback on …. page (slug).

There is a menu in the bottom of the Activity that has:
    All : Pending(Number of comments) | Approved | Spam(0) | Trash (0)

    How did this get populated.

    Thanks,

That’s intentional now, Pages default to comments disabled.

Comments turned off on pages – All new pages that you create will have comments turned off. Keep discussions to your blog, right where they’re supposed to happen.

    WordPress 4.3 “Billie”

To enable comments on a Page, edit the Page and look for a Discussion box below the editor where you’ll find a checkbox to enable comments. If you don’t see this, visit the Screen Options tab near the top-right where you can check “Discussion” there to enable the Discussion box below the editor.

    Thanks James,

I think I was not clear in my question. I do not want to enable comments. Here is my question:

    On the Admin dashboard:
    1. How does the Activity area on the dashboard show comments. I was under the impression that this is for “recent-activity” like site edits by admins.

There is no “Activity” area in the Dashboard for standard WordPress.

Are you using a plugin for this?

I am not using a plugin. My dashboard has the following screen options:

    At A glance
    Activity
    News from Modern Tribe
    Quick Draft
    WordPress News
    Welcome

There is WordPress SEO by Yoast. Is the Activity option populated by this plugin ?
The server admins put together a standard WordPress for Multisite and this came with it.

Oh, in the Dashboard widget, ok.

It shows your 5 most recent comments and pingbacks.

Pingbacks are different than comments. To disable them, edit the Page and look for a Discussion box below the editor where you’ll find a checkbox to disable Trackbacks and Pings. If you don’t see this, visit the Screen Options tab near the top-right where you can check “Discussion” there to enable the Discussion box below the editor.
