Require three characters for a serach

I want the user to actually have to type three characters at least before doing a search. I don’t want someone to get everything in the database so easily. ??
You mentioned in a post it would require a custom template and java script. I have already done a custom template for [pdb_list template=detailedsam] that overrides the dropdown box and makes it set to my “account_name” column.
Could you help point me in the direction on how to require the user at least type in three characters before doing a search.
This plugin is amazing by the way.
