    Hi –

I’m about to upload a series of Pages, many of which have links to external .pdf documents. I’ll have a few dozen of these .pdf files. Is it better to upload them (basically treating them the same that I do images), or should I be embedding them in Pages, or is there another, preferred approach?

    Thanks.

  • Just upload them and link to them. That’s what you usually see when people post PDFs.

Hmm…it didn’t seem to take. Toward the bottom of this page:

there is a link called handheld1xls.pdf, which I’ve tried to link to the .pdf file. But, nothing displays. Any hints?

Are you using a download plugin?

No, I’m not…my browser can handle .pdf on its own. But…not all browsers are created equal; do you recommend a plugin for this?

Your link is incorrect. You should link to the PDF file itself.

That’s it…thanks! Can I get it to open in a new window automatically, too?

Oh, is that ever so slick. Thanks a ton.

I just realized, though, that I’m going to run into another problem. I’m getting ready to migrate a bunch of files into WP. Several of these files share the same name (they’re in different directories currently). Is WP “smart” enough to recognize that these files are coming from different places when I import, or…am I going to have a problem?

    Thanks again.

You have to put them into different directories in WP or rename them. Otherwise the last one you put in will overwrite the first one.

OK…that doesn’t sound like too big a deal. Is this going to be a completely manual process, or can I get some help from WP during the uploads?

    Thanks.

Just upload the files via FTP to some other place on your server which will be MUCH quicker than uploading them individually via WP’s upload thing. Plus, that way you can preserve the directory structure (and not worry about files with the same name in different directories). Then link to whereever you uploaded them to.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks, Adam…I’ll mark this resolved.
