Update to 4.3

Have you tried just disabling the plugin first? If that doesn’t work, contact the plugin authors on their support forum: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wp-smushit if you’re using the free version.

That plugin should not be popping up junk during a core update. Disable it and try the 4.3 update.

Installation Failed

I’ve seen a few threads regarding this error message lately. The most authoritative answers I’ve seen are saying that it’s likely due to outdated OpenSSL on the server side. Old versions of it are not supported due to multiple security issues. The common culprit lately has been Yahoo hosting, but any host can let things slide too long. You’ll need to contact your host.

Can I just replace the html of my old version ( 3.1.1.) with the new version ( 4.3 ) through my cpanel ? It would be a cut and paste.

If your web host insists on using an unsupported server environment, you will continue to have this problem with all future updates (core, plugin, theme) until either they fix it or you change hosts to a better one.

Having said that, I’m not aware of any problem with performing a manual upgrade to 4.3.1. (It won’t solve the error problem.) You will find detailed instructions here:

Please make sure you have backups of both your database and all of your WP files and directories downloaded to your computer before you begin. That way you can always get back to where you were if the need arises. Good luck!
