Installed 3.x version, upgraded to 4.3, added Jetpack and Askimet, chose theme, created headers and icon, created title page. Wrote first post, and published it. Title appears on opening page, and text with image appears complete and as published in edit mode, but clicking on link takes me to a 404 error.

My FTP does not show the specified directory as existing, but I’ve never worked with database-driven websites before so I don’t know if that matters.

Front page at https://www.mjyoung.net/weblog/ and I’ve already gotten a couple of member registrations (have not yet announced the site, suspect they are Spam but haven’t yet checked), but I can’t get the posting system running. What did I miss?

  • MarkJosephYoung,

Is there any chance that you changed the post URL after publishing it? Also, what happens when you are in the WP Admin. area and click “View Post” from the post that isn’t showing up for you?

Thanks for the reply, Joseph. I can’t imagine any way that I altered the post URL; I hit “Publish”, then went to the home page and saw the link to the new post, clicked it, and got the error.

If I go to the list of “all posts” it shows as “Published”; “Edit” gives me the complete post, text and images; “View” gives me a 404 error page. I also get the 404 error if I try to open the 2013 Archives link from the front page. It’s as if the software thinks it has created a directory but the server doesn’t believe it’s there.

Correct “2013” to “2015”, sorry for typo.

    MarkJosephYoung,

I think you are right, it definitely looks like there is some sort of directory issue. I’ve tried to figure it out by typing in different folder paths, but no luck. Have you tried to create a new post and see if you can navigate to it?

Also, I’m curious, what do you have your permalink structure saved as? You can view it by going to Settings > Permalinks. I’m thinking you have it saved as “Day and Name”, I wonder what would happen if you changed it to “Postname.” Your pages seem to be saving just fine and they have the “postname” structure.

I have been having the same problem since upgrading. Joseph your tip on Settings>Permalinks did the trick. It had always been on “Postname” but when I checked just now it had somehow changed to custom, and had my URL listed in there. (?) Such a strange thing! But switching it back to Postname has made all my old pages appear again. Thank you so much.

    euphbob,

    Glad it worked!

    MarkJosephYoung,

    Did that work for you?

Thank you so much, Joseph. I had not tampered with that, but I had looked at it, and looking again I observed that it was set for “custom structure”. I remember thinking at the time that I had no idea what the ramifications of changing that would be so I didn’t, but now that it’s on “Postname” it’s working.

I do appreciate this. I was just starting to back up the stuff I’d done with the intent of doing an uninstall/reinstall to see of I could fix whatever it was, and now it looks like I’m good to go (or at least, if there are still problems I have not yet uncovered them).

    Awesome!
