    And I’ve got the solution myself!

    The font (Effra) had no characters for soft hyphens and I didn’t define any alternatives (like Arial or sans-serif).

    What I was using:
    font-family: Effra-Light;

    What I should have used:
    font-family: Effra-Light, Arial, sans-serif;

    Hello hello,

    I came across other strange characters in safari and discussed it with the webmaster of the theme. See the discussion there:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/strange-characters-behind-text?replies=8

    The temporary solution was to deactivate the hyphenator div tag for the paragraphs displaying those strange characters behind the words…

    Has there been this issue previously? Is there a permanent fix?

    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Samuel,

    Is it only specific browser, can you test any other? In my latest Opera Developer everything is fine, when I execute Hyphenator manually: https://maciej.kuzniczysko.pl/images/samuel.jpg

    Please update your plugin to 5.1.5 version and try changing settings (options-general.php?page=hyphenator) like manually choosen language etc. I don’t see any settings you have set (Hyphenator.config( [] );).

    Do you use hyphenate class for capturing texts? I tried manually with entry-content for example.

    I think it’s rather browser’s or Hyphenator.js’s issue than plugin’s. I will try to figure out when you provide more info and test mentioned possibilites.

    mathiasnater, thanks for the issue link.

    Workarounds:

    • disable automatic ligatures with the CSS-property -webkit-font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; or better
    • enable useCSS3hyphenation option

    samtazbu, is any of those workarounds is enought for you, if you still experience this problem?

    Hi Odie2,

    Thanks a lot for your earlier response – I had missed the notification somehow!

    I applied two filtered languages. Is there any other setting you suggest I should change or apply?

    The problems still seem to appear. See for instance, on Safari:
    https://www.samvriti.com/newsletter/december-2015/

    Also, I gave a shot on the discussion at GitHub but a user explained that this cannot be worked around on the plugin, but on the Hyphenator.js directly… Which is beyond my technical know-how ?? Could you perhaps suggest the few steps to apply any of these workarounds?

    Thank you!

    And, yes, I apply

    <div class=”hyphenate”>

    across entire text sections. How should “entry-content” be used?

    Thanks!

    Hi Samuel,

    For your settings – I used to set Script hook for wp_footer() as it improves page load time a bit and also to check Do not hide content during hyphenation as in my opinion it’s more user-friendly.

    Of course you can use custom class like hyphenate, even more – it’s recommended to use class wrapping less DOM (HTML tags etc.) elements (like you have for paragraphs instead in <body>), as then plugin have less to check and parse, so it’s faster.

    First workaround
    You should extend your CSS (by theme’s style.css, plugin with Custom CSS or any other way) with .hyphenate { -webkit-font-variant-ligatures: no-common-ligatures; }.

    Second workaround
    (Not sure if it works for non-English languages.)

    The plugin still have no possibility to set every of available options in Hyphenator.js, as I had no time to do textbox giving possibility to write everything. Moreover – the CSS3 hyphenation were there, but it’s perhaps missed in some release.

    I will try figure it as fast as I can, but at the moment please do it manually, step by step:

    1. a) Connect to your server with FTP client.
    2. a) Go to [your domain]/wp-content/plugins/hyphenator (for me it’s for example /websites/kuzniczysko.pl/wp-content/plugins/hyphenator).
    3. a) Open file plugin.php.
    4. a) download modified latest version of file: pluginphp.zip
    5. a) Replace file.

    or

    1. b) Go to https://www.samvriti.com//wp-admin/plugin-editor.php
    2 b) Select ‘Hyphenator’ plugin from dropdown in top right.
    3. b) Add on line 136 following code: $hyphenatorConfig['useCSS3hyphenation'] = true;
    4. b) Save.

    If you need additional help, just let me know here or on e-mail: maciejka45 at gmail dot com

    Hi Odie2,

    Thanks a lot! I add the lign in the custom CSS, and it is solving the problem. Great!

    Thanks again – thanks for the promptness as well.

    Samuel

    I just had the same problem in Safari and fixed it with the line: $hyphenatorConfig[‘useCSS3hyphenation’] = true;

    But im afraid that this will be overwritten with the next update of the plugin.
    Is there a way to add this permanently?

    ps: the problem only appears on retina macbooks, it was ok on older machines without retina.
