• After deactivating all the plugins and reactivating them once again, I still cannot edit or see my pages. WordPress just updated on its own last week and this is the first time back on my website. I’m using Nirvana theme with the following plugins: Akismet, Captcha by BestWebSoft, Contact Form 7, Floating Social Bar, Google Analyticator, HTML5 jQuery Audio Player, Image Widget, Jetpack by WordPress.com, MailChimp for WordPress Lite, MOJO Marketplace, PopUp by Supsystic, W3 Total Cache, WordPress Related Posts, and Yoast SEO.

    This happened once before and I was able to fix it by getting rid of a plugin. However, that is not the case this time. Does anyone know if any of the above plugins are causing problems with the new version of WordPress or if the Nirvana Theme could be the problem?

    I’ve viewed several other threads that say something about manually updating WordPress and other complicate stuff. I’d like some very clear (for dummies) instructions on what else I can do.

    Thank you!

  • Have you tried changing to the default theme (with no plugins activated)?

    Hi Colin,

    Which default theme? Nirvana? I’ve done nothing to change it other than add a banner. Would I be better off purchasing a theme and then maybe this won’t happen again? I can’t spend hours on end trying to fix plugin and theme issues every time WordPress is updated. So, there has to be a way around it since this is the second time I’ve had to do this. However, this time, the typical fixes aren’t working.

    Also, my site depends on most of these plugins to work properly. So, that’s why I was asking if people knew if there were problems with any of them. If there are better ones out there, I’d like to know about them.

    I’ve gone back once again, deactivated ALL the plugins. With them all deactivated, the problem is still not fixed. There are only two other options: There’s something wrong with Nirvana or the new version of WordPress isn’t compatible with something else. My other WordPress sites are all working fine.

    I’m having the same issue.

    There is a way to check if any of the plugins are not compatible with your current wordpress install. Just go search for the installed plugins ( make a search like if you want to install a new one ) and then you’ll see some description saying if it is compatible or not.

    On the other hand. You’d better use a child theme ( of the Nirvana theme ) to avoid problems during updates. Because wordpress is actually replacing the old files with the updated ones. So, all the changes you’d made in old ones will be lost.

    I’m sure you’re replying to the original author of this thread, but …

    I’m not using the same theme and this problem isn’t being caused by any plugins. This happened immediately after the most recent update to the WordPress. I haven’t altered any of the original WP files so when WP updates – at least for me – I don’t need to remake any changes.

    Switching to the child theme of the template I bought and use still yields the same result as does switching to the Twenty Fifteen theme. All of the plugins I’m using are compatible. Disabling all of them and re-enabling them one by one still results in the same – content does NOT show when viewing, though I am able to (and do have) content entered on the backend.

    Thank you, benmir. If I leave everything alone and wait for the plugins to finally update, will the issue eventually go away? I don’t remember seeing any child themes for Nirvana but I’ll go look again. It was suggested that I go and use the default settings for Nirvana, which I haven’t done yet.

    My biggest question is… how do I keep this from happening every time WordPress decides to update? I really don’t have hours to spend fixing this every time.

    @theiowasoapshed:

    You may not be having the same issue—you are only seeing the same symptoms. You should feel free to start your own thread.

    @delh:

    Not being able to see your site is not a WordPress update issue. Have you checked your server error logs?

    (@delh)

    Kjodle, I can see my site just fine. When I open a page to edit, no words are showing and there’s no way to go in an edit. This happened once before and I was able to fix it by disabling a plugin that was no longer being updated. However, all of the plugins that I now have are needed to make my site run. So, if any of them are no longer working, I need a good substitute. That’s why I listed which plugins I’m using above so people can look at them and give advice on what I might be able to use in their place.

    > Which default theme? Nirvana?

    Any of the ones that come bundled with WordPress should be fine, eg https://www.ads-software.com/themes/twentyfifteen/

    Colin, so you’re saying that if I switch back to TwentyFifteen (or one of the others), my site should never have issues? I’m not impressed with the look of these themes, which is why I chose another.

    Once all of the plugins eventually update, will my site go back to normal? Everything is working with the exception of the ability to edit and see the pages when I’m in the edit mode.

    No, just that is how you troubleshoot severe problems.

    You need to rule out an issue with your WordPress theme.

    Thanks, Colin. So, I should choose (let’s say TwentyFifteen) theme, activate it, then go check to see if I can edit? If that works, I know it’s a theme problem? I do know that Nirvana had an update this week so it’s possible the other plugins haven’t caught up?

    Yes correct. You need to eliminate both plugins and theme as a source of the problem, which is usually the case about 98% of the time.

    If it isn’t then I would speak to your web host.

    I went and changed my theme to another one. That didn’t help. But, I did deactivate all of the plugins. That didn’t work. Then, I figured that if I just wait it out, something would catch up and stuff would start working again. So, that’s what I did and everything is fine now. A little prayer always helps.
