Auto generated passwords

  • I don’t know if its something I enabled or disabled, but WP does not allow me, as an administrator, or my registered users to manually change their passwords. The only way to change a password is through auto generate. Is there somewhere in the program I can change this to allow my users to manually generate their password?

    I am using WP User Control Widget. Could this be the problem?

  • You should be able to change password in WordPress admin panel.

    WP User Control Widget Plugin has no option to change password manually.It sends a random password to email.

    When I am logged into the WP admin panel (dashboard?) and I navigate to user, whether it is my user name or a registered user, it only allows auto generate password, even for me.

    I created a “fake” user, and using WP User Control I clicked on reset p/w. It sent me a “temporary” password in an e-mail and said to log in and create a new password. I logged in and it only allows auto generate! When it auto generates it creates a password that looks like this:

    Y0np$S0D^*%pm1mCQZpbUB@b

    As if someone who is interested in the services offered on my site is going to 1) memorize this password, 2) keep it hidden in a secure place they can quickly access in order to visit and participate in my site, 3) have it tattooed on their arm so they never miss a blog post!

    This auto generate is new to my site. I have been using WP for at least 5 years and it formerly allowed manual passwords. I have no idea when this auto generated feature took over.

    Do you know of any way to remove the auto feature and replace it with manual? If you do I will be forever in your debt. Well, maybe not forever.

    You can still change password manually. WordPress recently introduces auto generated password.

    Once password is generated, just remove generated password in password field and enter your own.

    Then Update profile. It should work.

    You are brilliant! That was so doggone obvious I can’t believe I was so stu… uh, yes I can.

    I deleted the already highlighted auto password, typed in my own, logged out, and voila! Works like a champ.

    Okay. Next time you happen to be in Monmouth, Oregon I’ll buy you a pizza.
