WordPress 4.3.1 – install failed – Cannot Create Directory

  • I’ve trie this update with two websites I am working on and both have resulted in the following error.

    ??“Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/release/en_CA/wordpress-4.3.1.zip…
    Unpacking the update…
    Could not create directory.
    Installation Failed”

    Then, after this I am unable to upload any new media, getting this error.
    ??““test_image.jpg” has failed to upload due to an error
    The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2015/09.”

    How can this be fixed and why have no previous updates had this issue that I am aware of?

    This happens with either the CA or US update being selected

    For some reason, if the auto update does not work on your server, please try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.
    –Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong.
