Just figured out that it seems to be to do with the fact that I have created a hierarchical folder structure so my folders have parents!

    E.g. I have this:

    Learning Observations > Cognitive Development

So, when I filter by the parent folder (Learning Observations) I also display the items in the child folder (Cognitive Development).

I tested this by setting the parent for ‘Cognitive Development’ to ‘None’. Filtering by folder now seems to work OK.

Is this the case? Should the folders be arranged simply as a flat list?

    Thanks

  • Hi there dlongm01,

We had not factored in the idea of using folders in a hierarchical structure to be honest which is a complete oversight on our part.

We will be releasing an update in the next few days and i shall ensure we add this feature in as part of it.

    Thanks for the heads up!

    Thanks for the confirmation.

Another useful detail would be to add a drop down list of folders to the filters on the page list. This is already added to the post list. Would be very handy to have in page list as well.

Cool, was not aware that it was not already added but will get onto that. Thanks again.

I have fixed the bug with the pages filter not working properly. Hope this has helped slightly. You will need to update to latest (should be working in just a few moments).

    That update works nicely.

Here’s a thought – just to be clear about what would work for me, because my original post might not have been very clear (and of course what works for me might not be what works for everyone else).

I was misled by the presence of the parent page field on the folder editing page and just assumed that hierarchical organisation was the way to go. So I created parent pages for my folders.

Let’s suppose I created folder Y with the parent X.

I then discovered that if I wanted, say, to just look at that those files in folder X and I filtered by that folder I also displayed the child files in folder Y.

Once I figured out that I needed to remove the parent pages from my folders – to remove the hierarchy – it all worked fine. Since folder Y now has no parent folder X only shows what is in X.

This works for me. After all, categories are already hierarchical (and rightly so) but to me the value of folders is to have individual groups of files that don’t display the contents of child folders.

In summary – for me, folders work best when they are not hierarchical. In use they allow me to isolate specific groups of files without showing me all the children (I can use categories for that).

Hope that makes sense. My recommendation would be

    (i) simply remove the parent page field from the folder creation screen thus forcing a flat list of folders (and explain to the user the rationale).

    OR

(ii) allow a hierarchy but do not display contents of child folders when filtering by folder ((and explain to the user the rationale).

    OR

    (iii)

leave things as they are but explain to the user the effect of creating a folder hierarchy (in effect it’s no different from using categories).

As I have said before though – this is a very useful plugin. Whatever change you make I am sure I can live with it (and the new filter is great).

    Cheers

Folders are basically categories. They are setup with a custom taxonomy and then appended into the sidebar for easy filtering basically.

To switch off folder hierarchy would make them the same as tags.

To make the filter only show folders assigned to Parent X and NOT the pages inside of Child Y of Parent X would entirely defeat the idea of child/parent relationships. A parent is meant to show all the children assigned to it be it folders or pages.

I have not tested Folders as a multi level system but only as a flat system but will explore this further.

Thanks for your advice, we will check into this to make sure that Folders expands in a way that would benefit all.
