Plugin not working after reactivation; captions appearing in excerpts

I’m using the Divi theme. I installed AE, which worked in reducing the length of my excerpts, except that it also displayed image captions in excerpts which made some of them sound idiotic. So I deactivated AE and tried another plugin which didn’t work. Upon reactivation (including uninstalling and reinstalling) of AE, AE doesn’t work at all. Any idea what’s going on? Thanks!
