• I tried to update my wordpress site but got an error on installing new packages from file permission. I changed the file permission and continued getting the error so I tried manually installing. My web host nearlyfreespeech automatically locks down wp-login.php any time it detects a brute force attack, the solution being to manually change file permission. I’d fixed that before and I doubt that’s related but thought I would mention it.

To do the manual install I downloaded the zip, and made a copy of the original site from the root directory in case anything happend. I made a mistake and accidentally only copied the wp_admin directory. From there, I copied the contents of the zip file https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/release/wordpress-4.3.1.zip from the “wordpress” directory into my directory.

Now whenever I login the dashboard page I get the error “The file ‘wp-config.php’ already exists. If you need to reset any of the configuration items in this file, please delete it first. You may try installing now.”

When I click “Installing Now” I get an “Already installed” page. If I remove wp-config.php I get a page to install. The links are mysite/wp-admin/setup-config.php and mysite/wp-admin/install.php Obviously wordpress is already installed. The front page of the blog displays fine, even other pages while logged in work. it’s only the dashboard that gives this error, locking me out of it. I cannot restore from backup because of mistakenly copying the wrong directory. Suggestions on fixing the dashboard page?

  • Did you get a good backup of your site before you attempted the manual update?

Unfortunately, no. By mistake I only backed up what was inside the wp_admin folder.

*That said, the site theme, front page and everything is there, it only seems to be the dashboard that is broke now.
