Where are all these New User Registrations coming from?

  • I just started my WordPress blog and only have one short article published and am still working out the details of my sites appearance, settings, etc. So far so good, BUT I suddenly am getting emails telling me someone has registered with my blog. In one day I received over 10 new user registrations in my inbox. I am wondering how and where they are registering because I don’t see a sign up box on my blog and I can’t even figure out yet how to make commenting possible on my only article. The emails and names coming in look suspiciously like spam names and are all from yahoo.com. How are they finding me and what should I do about them? If they are legit I can’t figure out how they are signing up.

  • Users in bulk like that are almost always spam. These users are probably being made by a bot of some sort.

    As for stopping this, there are a few options. One would be to go into your settings and uncheck the anybody can register setting. Another option is to hide your backend login. By default your WordPress login page is https://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/. If you are not displaying any sort of login link then if you change the URL of the login page (there are multiple articles and plugins out there that can do it) nobody will be able to find it.

    I can’t even figure out yet how to make commenting possible on my only article.

    You can do this by going to the comments metabox in your page/post editor and checking the allow comments option.

    I unchecked the “anybody can register”, but I can’t for the life of me find the turn comments on or off box! I clicked the “comments” section in the dashboard side bar menu and read through the whole page but it doesn’t specify an on or off option, its just a page that will show comments and I can approve or trash them. I’ve looked through all the other pages and just can’t seem to find it. Sorry, but I guess I need my hand held for this, ??
