Original design v. design theme template

  • We’re re-designing my site (using WordPress.) My web designer wants to build his own design theme from scratch rather than choosing a design theme template – like from StudioPress (which is what I was thinking to do.)

    What are the pros and cons either way?

    Here’s my concerns. (Are they founded?)

    1. If he builds his own will I have problems later on with plugins not working and WordPress upgrades not working?

    2. How do I know his design will work on mobile?

    3. How do I know his design will be fast loading?

    4. If there are things that need to be fixed or I need to make changes later, does it mean I’ll probably need to go back to him for help?
