• Hello everyone,

I am using Gravity Forms with WP Mail SMTP.

When I receive an email notification from the contact form on the website it shows the “From Name” as my site name instead of the person who is filling up the contact form.

Is there any way to have the name of the person show up?

  • Just notice, that good practice for transactional emails is if you set up sender yoruself/yoursite instead of user who filled form.

Sender’s name and email address belongs to “Reply to” not Sender.

Thank you for quickly replying Peter.

Of course, the sender is set up as myself,
and the “Reply to” address is the person filling the form,
it is working correctly when I reply to an email.

I’m trying to figure out if the “Reply to” name can be the person filling the form instead of my site’s name.

Question is related to Gravity form. Anyway what I tested, Gravity forms allow you to set up just email as Reply to, not name in front of that field. Probably some tweak required for this.

I have no problem to set up this with different forms plugin, but it does not work with Gravity.

I understand.. I’ve tried that too, to set up the name in front of the email address in the “Reply to” field, but no change.

By the way, when I didn’t have to use SMTP to send emails it showed up just fine with the name and the email of the person sending the form,
but now I have to use SMTP, otherwise emails won’t go thought, I’m guessing something to do with the hosting.

The form is set up correctly, to present the sender name and address,
but when combining it with SMTP it overrides the name.

It is a bit annoying because when you try to find a specific email,
all you see is a bunch of emails with the website name instead of the person.

    Any ideas?

@djlo you are confused about something

it shows the “From Name” as my site name
all you see is a bunch of emails with the website name instead of the person

These statements agree with this statement :

Of course, the sender is set up as myself

And contradict with this statement :

I’m trying to figure out if the “Reply to” name can be the person filling the form instead of my site’s name.

    So to clarify:

    • It is the From field that is used for your list of emails in your inbox
    • It is the Reply-To field that is used for replying

when I didn’t have to use SMTP to send emails it showed up just fine with the name and the email of the person sending the form

This probably means that WP SMTP Mail is overriding the value of the from field sent by Gravity Forms. There are other SMTP plugins that have the feature you want, keeping the from field as Gravity Forms sent it.

Gravity forms allow you to set up just email as Reply to, not name in front of that field

If you can fix the From field, you don’t even need the Reply-to field. But, assuming Gravity works the same way Contact Form 7, this is simple.

Change the reply-to email to be :

    Reply-to: [visitor-name] <[visitor-email]>

    Note the angle brackets.

btw. try to consider use transactional emails with API instead of SMTP. Actually it looks like the best solution for emails. Its faster.
About Gravity forms and Reply to with name try to contact their support, maybe they can help you.
What I tested yesterday with Gravity, it does not work even without any smtp plugin, it just does not work if column is filled with {name} {email} at the same time and show error with mentioned {name} <{email}>

it just does not work if column is filled with {name} {email} at the same time and show error with mentioned {name} <{email}>

Thanks Peter, good to know. I made a guess!

    Thank you Jason, Peter.

That is what I thought.. I AM sending the emails from myself so the from name would be me, I was wondering if there was a way to change that somehow.

Actually what I have figured out is that the “from name” is being taken from the email account it is being sent from, which is me, so whatever name I have set up in my email account, that’s what will show in the “from name”.

At first I couldn’t tell because it is the same name for both the site and the email account.

So.. I’ve modified the form to have “- Sender Name” added to the subject field, and now I can differentiate between all the emails.

Actually what I have figured out is that the “from name” is being taken from the email account it is being sent from, which is me, so whatever name I have set up in my email account, that’s what will show in the “from name”.

    Gmail has this overriding behaviour.

    Gmail has this overriding behaviour.

    Outlook/Hotmail also.
