Hey all. I have a WordPress site named example.com. I have a subdomain, via WordPress Multisite, called sub.example.com. I have mapped sub.example.com to foo.com.

When I access the dashboard as well as visit the public-facing site for sub.example.com, all plugins and functionalities work as expected. However, when I do the same for foo.com, they don’t.

In the dashboard for foo.com, the Visual Editor is “whited out.” When I visit the public-facing site, my syntax highlighter plugin (which works on sub.example.com) doesn’t apply.

    – For WP Multisite, should I be using the dashboard for the subdomain, or the domain to which the subdomain is mapped?
    – Ideas on how to resolve this problem? My instinct is that it is not a permissions issue.

    Hi willw9!

Sorry you haven’t had a reply until now. Maybe you have already figured this out?

Usually, once you map the domain to a subsite, the urls for the subsite (dashboard, as well as front-facing) all redirect to the mapped domain. This makes me wonder if there is something wrong with your domain mapping. What domain mapping plugin are you using? Do you have other subsites that are mapped and working like I described with the redirects?

    I’m having the same problem!

The visual editor is totally gone for all mapped subsites, but shows up for all non-mapped subsites.

I am using WordPress MU Domain Mapping (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/)

My fix was to check box 4 in the settings, “Redirect administration pages to site’s original domain (remote login disabled if this redirect is disabled)”. I don’t know if that has other negative repercussions, but at least it’s letting me use my visual editor which is needed for some things.

Todd, you really should make your own post to get better help in the forums. When the visual editor disappears, it’s almost always a plugin conflict. Try disabling all your plugins (both network activated and the ones for the specific site where you are having the issue), and if that solves it problem, reactivate them one by one to find the culprit.

If it is truly the WP MU Domain Mapping plugin (I really think it is something else!), then post a support topic for that plugin here:
