• Hi there,

I’ve switched from a WordPress platform (that was Bluehost hosted) to Squarespace. Right now none of the older URLs from the older website are showing up. They’re saying that they don’t exist. I’ve been trying to export the WordPress materials, but I cannot sign in to the WordPress blog site to do the steps to export. Any ideas?

May I ask if there were issues that made you switch to Squarespace? Is there anything we can do to help with them?

I’m not sure how Squarespace works as far as importing goes, but I would log into your Bluehost account using FTP and download your WordPress files that way. Then you can export your database. This way you shouldn’t need to worry about logging in and exporting from your blog itself. I hope this helps.

Hi Geoffrey! Thanks for the quick response. I switched over for a few reasons, but the biggest one being an integrated approach to commerce. I’ll definitely give this a go! I hadn’t known about the FTP approach to exporting the data. Will it be an xml file?

FTP will give you the actual files, such as core files and photos. I’m not sure the different options Squarespace has for converting, so this may not be what they need. You may also want to try Squarespace support to let them know what is going on and see if they can assist with importing the files.

As for you not being able to log in – have you already started the process of moving the site or should your original site still be working fine?
What is your website address? You said you cannot log in, but are the pages still working if someone just tries to visit?

Yes, I’ve already started the process of moving my site. And unfortunately all URLs for the older blog posts show up as “not existing” unless it’s the general home page or was created after I started designing on Squarespace. (By the way, my website is https://www.roamandgolightly.com if you want to take a look) I’ll reach out to their customer support to see if these files can be uploaded. Is there any other way to get the XML files? Thank you so, so much!

The only other thing I can think of would be to check Bluehost and see if your temporary URL still works. This URL is a way you can access a site without using the domain name. If that is still available, you should be able to log in and export the XML file you are looking for.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much! Changing the URL makes me nervous, because it is connected to Squarespace now. Do you know if this will make any difference?

I’m also curious about why WordPress would erase my website. When I log in, it’s almost as if it never existed at all. No website listed at all. So strange! Any ideas on why this would happen?

    Hi,

Do you know what your temporary URL was at bluehost for the site, the URL before you pointed your domain name to them? For example, it would be https://some~server.bluehost.com/~yourusername

I’m thinking since none of your content links that something went wrong with .htaccess file. Updating permalink in WordPress settings would normally fix the .htaccess and everything would link again.

Now that said, if you already pointed your domain to Squarespace, then we can still get the WordPress site working on Bluehost with the temp URL but we will have to replace and update a few areas, if your up for it ??

I can of course guide you here and hopefully it all will make sense.

Hi CureWP, thanks for your help!

I’m really just wondering why my WordPress blog would no longer be able to be accessed. When I click “My Site” there is a banner that says “You don’t have a WordPress site.” I’ve been using WordPress for the past two years with no problems until I tried to change platforms. After that it seems to have completely disappeared for me to access my files from.

How can I find out where my older content has gone through WordPress? It seems silly but Bluehost isn’t able to give me any backups in anything other than a .zip and .tar file… which won’t work on importing. I’m in desperate need of the xml file that can be exported from WordPress.

I hope this all makes sense! I feel so disappointed that I can’t seem to figure this issue out. Thanks again for any guidance you can send my way!
