There are quite a few ways to run WordPress locally: DesktopServer (my personal choice), WAMP, MAMP, and others. I highly recommend doing things this way.

One reason would be to test updates before you do them on a live site. We always hope a plugin/theme/core update won’t break anything, but sooner or later something likely will; the more plugins you have, the higher the chance of this. If you have a test site that is just like your live site, you can test all WordPress updates there to make sure everything goes well.

It’s also great for development and customization. I do a lot of experimenting with stuff, and even just testing new plugins. If you are doing this on your live site, you risk it going down.

Let us know if you have any other specific questions. I hope this helps.
