Hi went to login my site this morning could not access the site I telephoned my ISP and they told me my IP address was blocked from the site that was sorted quickly however they told me that if I tried to login to get to dashboard I would be blocked again as this was a WordPress problem they had been swamped by people complaining about the problem so my question is surely it is upto the WordPress team to sort this and put out another update to fix the problem and not expect someone with limited experience (like myself to try to fix the problem)

I just logged into my dashboard, several times.

    No problem!

This means your issue is your installation/server-specific.

Do you have any security plugins installed or that were installed prior to 4.4.1 update?

No I only have Justin tad locks members plugin.

Hi I have just tried again to login and now it looks like my IP address is blocked again as I cannot view the site at all. I get the message “the server has stopped responding”

You have to contact your hosting company and get them to fix it on their end.

This is from 2 hours ago on WordPress support:
“cPanel users may find wp-admin blocked due to an update to their server’s mod_security rules. Preliminary reports suggest rules #214620 and #214940 are to blame. Please contact your hosting provider if you encounter this.”

I just spent an hour online with my hosting provider, and they created a workaround so I could get into my site.

As @americaninlima suggested, please contact your hosting provider and discuss this issue with them.

I telephoned my ISP and they take the view that this is a WordPress problem and not any of their doing and require £100 to help fix the login. thanks for that WordPress !!!!

Does anyone know what the workaround is that the hosting provider did? My ISP is saying it’s a WP problem also.

I believe it’s a server problem because several other sites under several different hosting providers are fine.

It is a problem with the cPanel mod_security rules and WordPress 4.4.1. The rules are not new, only the WordPress update. Hosting with a provider that doesn’t use cPanel, or one that has disabled these rules on the relevant website, will avoid this problem.

Your cPanel hosting provider should be able to disable mod_security on your site, or at least disable those two rules. However, I suspect the better solution is for WordPress to post another update.

Great news for me, my ISP contacted me to say they had fixed the problem so glad.

Same problem here. My ISP has told me they have disabled the conflicting rules (‘214940’ and ‘214620’), however login problems keep going. Only disabling mod_security on Cpanel fixes it.

We don’t really push updates that fast, especially not when it’s caused by a 3rd party rule set for another 3d party module for a webserver, that’s just way too much to expect ??

Comodo, who is the 3rd party provider of the rules, is working on a fix to the rules that are affecting your WordPress installs (they’ve acknowledged that there’s something wrong with their rules, and it’s not WordPress’ doing).

You can see the mention of it at https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/read-this-first-wordpress-44-master-list?replies=7&view=all#post-7857957 where we also point out that it is up to the providers to apply the updated rules when they are released.

    @antoniomc76,
Please note this is a “resolved” topic.

If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.
