How to use a new theme in new directory using the same database

    Hi, I have a running WP site that I would like to upgrade to a new theme. I would like to develop the site in a sub directory “/new”. I created this directory and installed a fresh WP with the new theme. In the wp-config file used the login details from the existing WPsite.
    Now when I go to https://www.mydomain/new the site stays blanc and when I want to login at https://www.mydomain/new/wp-admin I automatically go into the dashboard of the “old” site in the root directory. So something doesn’t work as I was thinking it would work.
    Is there a way to develop the new theme using the existing database?
