Multi Site and Domain Mapping

  • So i am about to install multisite and domain mapping. First, what i am trying to do is be able to create and manage two sites from one wordpress account (abc.com and 123.com) I have gotten pretty far but not sure what to do. I have domain mapping ready and waiting. I have installed multisite, but i don’t know whether to pick Subdomain or subdirecty. I know the difference, site1.abc.com abc.com/site1 etc. But what do i do if i am going to add domain mapping? Does it not matter which one?

  • It doesnt really matter. What matters is what you need to do. IE, do you need separate sites at the directory level?

    OK, that’s what i thought. That it didn’t matter. But yes, i want two sites, different domain names, in the one wordpress

    Also, i see the message that recommends removing the ‘www’ from the url before using multisite. When i try to do that in the settings i get this message:

    The Site address you entered did not appear to be a valid URL. Please enter a valid URL.

    Any idea why?

    I’ve got 3 sites I’d like to consolidate into 1 wordpress installation and I’m looking at the ‘www’ thing too.

    I’d rather keep it of course, but what risks are involved in leaving it on?

    I believe when you first install WP multisite that it is recommended to not include ‘www’. I do not think you can change it afterwards.

    FYI, we installed our WP subdomain multisite on a 3 part hostname, site.domain.com. All of our subsites were subsiteX.site.domain.com which we remapped to subsiteX.domain.com

    I believe if you keep the www, then your subsites are named subsiteX.www.domain.com. Without ‘www’ then the subsites are named subsiteX.domain.com
