How to: Large image into a Thumbnail

I was wondering if there was a way to have the most recent topic use a large full-size image, and then when another more recent headline is posted, the previous one becomes a smaller thumbnail image on its own, without having to change it to a thumbnail yourself in the WordPress dashboard.
