Upgrading: Consistent Place to Look for Diffs?

  • I like to keep my WordPress as up-to-date as possible. But I find it profoundly annoying to, each upgrade, follow the full upgrade instructions, make sure I don’t overwrite necessary and/or customized files, etc.

    Mr. Jaquith on markjaquith.wordpress.com used to provide diffs with each version; he no longer does so.

    Is there a place where I can go to consistently determine what files have changed between version x.xx and version y.yy, so that I can upgrade *only* those files?

    Just changing the value of the version numbers in old_path and new_path will give you a ‘diff’ of the files changed or added. At the bottom of the page you’ll find a Zip Archive link which neatly roll all the files up in one zip, BUT this has a bit of a bug in that every PHP doc in the archive will sport an extra blank line, which can cause a lot of problems. Keeping that in mind…

    Thanks — that’s great! The ZIP file with no blank lines would be nice, but I don’t mind downloading the whole update; it’s not that bad of a download. What was really being time-consuming for me was going through the whole “upload ALL the files” routine. This’ll save a lot of time.
