which is better open link in new tab or same page?

    hello, I can open the link in the same page where the back button gets me back, or I can open in a new tab where it must be click x to close.

    which method seems to be most expeditious and user friendly for a web site do you think? google search turned up very few references.

    personally I prefer the tab to the back button.

    Opening in the same page will always be the most user friendly, because then the reader can choose to open the link in the same page, a new tab, or a new window at their discretion without having a choice forced upon them. ??
