New version will address all reported issues
-
Version 2.0 of Loco Translate is now in development. It will be available some time in 2016.
The original (1.x) version of this plugin was built as a tool for developers, but it’s clear now that a much wider variety of people are using it to translate themes and plugins written by other people. This fact has resulted in nearly 500 support requests, bringing to light many compatibility problems for which there are no immediate or simple solutions.
Loco Translate 2.0 is being completely rebuilt to address everything that’s been learned. Every shortcoming, compatibility problem, bug report and feature request has been noted.
Below is a short list of the highest priority issues that will be solved one way or another in version 2.0. Feel free to add your own feature requests below, but please refrain from asking support questions here.
Developer / Translator modes
Not everyone using the plugin is a developer. The new version will provide different options depending on whether you’re developing your own theme, or translating someone else’s. Amongst other things, this should avoid the confusion over where your files should be saved.
File locations and persistence
There are many reports of files being overwritten or disappearing. The new version will provide ways to ensure that automatic updates can’t delete your files.
Woo Commerce
A huge number of support requests come from the Woo Commerce community. Woo Commerce will be used as a primary test case to ensure the new version of the plugin is compatible.
Multiple text domains
Version 1 only supports themes with a single text domain. The new version will approach the organisation of “packages” in such a way that this huge problem disappears.
Configuration “magic”
One of the biggest problems of version 1 has been making sense of unconventional theme setups. Making this process “just work” has backfired quite badly. The new plugin will address this problem, but probably by being less automatic when themes are set up weirdly. Version 2 will avoid “guess work”, and provide manual overrides so compatibility problems can be resolved by a human.
Multisite
There are reports that 1.x doesn’t work in multisite mode. The new version will.
Supported languages
The current version of the plugin has a built-in list of official WordPress languages. The new version will use a live feed from WordPress to make sure this is always up to date.
