Does "Only show children of" work with custom post types and taxonomies?

I’ve got a custom post type setup with a custom taxonomy. I am trying to only display the children of one of the taxonomies. It says to insert ‘category id’. Can I insert a custom taxonomy here? And if I can… it appears it’s not working for me. Any tips?
